Upon absorption of exudate, the hydrophilic particles in the dressing can form a gel-like semi-solid substance that adheres to the base of the wound, providing and maintaining a wet environment conducive to wound healing. Hydrocolloid dressings are generally used to be applied over wounds and absorb wound exudate before a chemical reaction occurs.
